TOOL REVIEW: CRETACOLOR ARTIST'S LEAD SKETCH

Updated: Mar 28

This is a quick sketch of a table scape done with Cretacolor artist leads in dark/medium brown and white in a Stillman & Birn Nova series sketchbook on a medium gray paper.

The artist leads are new to me and I used them in a challenge that I was part of in an online art group. I was supposed to use a medium that was out of my comfort zone. They are definitely that.

The leads are quite HARD and really chubby; keeping a good point was a struggle. To be fair, I am used to pastel pencils and these artist leads don't lend themselves to the delicate shading that can be produced by a pastel pencil.

If a pastel pencil and a 7H graphite pencil had a baby, it would be the Cretacolor. That being said, it was a good experience to expand my artistic tool box.

I do love the ordinary objects and textures in this composition and plan on painting this image in pastel soon. More to come on that.
