FAQs

1. Is Joey your real name?
Yes, it is my real name. My last name is a combination of my grandmothers’ maiden names.
2. How would you describe yourself in three words?
* VERY nearsighted (I've worn glasses since 4th grade)
* Introverted
* Curious
3. What is your favorite picture book?
I love Irish faerie tales, and the art of The Gashlycrumb Tinies by Edward Gorey, and the character development in The Shapes Trilogy Series By Mac Barnett, and the authentic voice of author Derrick Barnes in all his books, and the joyful memories I have of reading to my daughter from Hairy McClary by Lynley Dodd. I could keep going, but I will stop there. For now.
4. When did you first start making art and writing stories?
My earliest ART memory is a mural that I drew on the inside of my closet when I was 4 years old. It was a story about a farm. I think it's still there.
5. What inspires your stories?
So many things! People, animals, nature, science, some of the tough things in life and some funny things, too...the list is LONG. At the heart of each of my stories is a glimmer of something that I’ve experienced.
6. What mediums do you use?
For fine art: mostly oil, acrylic, and watercolor paints.
For picture books: watercolor, ink, pencil, gouache, acrylic, and digital painting.
7. Where do you create your work?
In my home studio, where our wee pup Emma supervises me. She is paid in snacks and belly skritches.
8. Why do you think picture books are important?
Reading to a child is a nurturing experience. That alone is a comprehensive recommendation for picture books. Each shared story becomes a warm memory and opens the door to the wonder of books.
9. What is your favorite food?
It's a tie between (authentic, spicy) Mexican food and gelato.
10. Beach or mountains?
Beach. I feel best when I'm near salt water.
11. What is your favorite number?
Prime numbers. I like their attitude and the way they refuse to be easily divided.
